New Dental Crown? 3 Recovery Symptoms That Require Another Dental Appointment

Dental crown procedures have a very short recovery period. In fact, most people can resume normal activities after the numbness wears off. However, tooth sensitivity is not uncommon, so you should expect to be very gentle with your tooth for a few days after the procedure. Symptoms that linger during the recovery period are often signs that an adjustment needs to be made. You should make a follow up appointment with your dentist if you have any of the following symptoms during your recovery period or any time after getting a dental crown.

Lingering Pain

Nerve damage can result in lingering pain after a dental crown placement. In most cases, the nerve gets damaged during the procedure, but you and your dentist won't know it until after the numbing agent wears off. Sometimes, a healthy nerve can start to deteriorate after a procedure due to stress and trauma from the procedure. Pain may also occur if your natural tooth surface becomes too thin during the application process. If you experience moderate or lingering pain, you should talk to your dentist, as this is not to be expected during recovery. You may need a root canal to rectify the problem.

Awkward Bite

You can almost bet that your new crown will feel different. However, it shouldn't affect your bite much. If you don't adjust to your new crown within a few days or if your crown seems to be affecting your bite, it may need to be adjusted. A crown that is too high can affect your bite, which may eventually lead to other complications, such as a broken crown and pain in your head, neck and shoulder. Since bite issues are not usually evident until after the medication wears off and you resume eating, it's up to you to watch out for it.

Gum Irritation

If the crown is too long, causing it to press down into your gums, you may experience gum pain. You may also notice swelling, bleeding and ulceration in the area where the crown was placed. If your gum remains irritated after your recovery period has passed, you need to get an adjustment. Failure to do so may result in long-term complications, such as gum recession.

Complications are rare after a crown placement, but they can happen. If you notice any of the above complications, be sure to talk to your dentist. A simple adjustment is usually all that is needed to correct the problem. You can also reach out to places like Pittsburgh Dental Spa for more information.
